The Project

SL Construction Services has successfully completed the refurbishment of the Waterproofing and Surfacing contract to the Avonmouth Road Bridge on the M5. The project required early contractor involvement by SL Construction Services to develop a suitable combined waterproofing and surfacing solution that provides the Highways Agency with an improved service life for the bridge.

The Works

Working with the client's engineers and interroute to a performance specification and budget SL Construction Services and its surfacing partner Aeschlimann AG developed a bespoke solution to accommodate the movements of the structure and to provide additional service life to reduce cyclical maintenance on the structure. A combined solution of the Eliminator waterproofing system and Gussasphalt surfacing was selected as the preffered solution. Early involvement allowed SL Construction Services to value engineer the scheme and agree costs prior to commencing works to include all programme requirements and quality and safety controls to account for some 50,000 vehicles a day running through to project. The installation works were successfully completed over 4 months in 2008 and 4 months in 2009 in the winter period with all works being completed ahead of programme. The scheme is a major innovation in UK bridge building and refurbishment. It provides a major advance in the lifespan of waterproofing and surfacing on UK road bridges reducing the need for cyclical maintenance and disruption to the public road users. SL Construction Services are rolling out this unique and exciting solution across clients in the UK and overseas.
